The art of building high-tech motor boats

When you ask excellent sail boats builders to create a motor boat, something interesting and extraordinary at the same time can happen!

As a matter of fact sailors have the tendency of developing a particular sensibility and appreciation, normally unknown to the ones who pilot motor boats, for the elements: winds, streams, tides, etc.

When you sail, the simple speed rise of a knot, represents a great result: for example, passing from 6 to 7 knots means a 16% gain!

On the other hand, the motor boat pilot will pay less attention to a rise in the speed even within the range of a few knots.

Since the driving force (the wind) that moves a sail boat is limited up to a certain extent, the need of making the sail as efficient as possible is definitely a must.

On the contrary, within the field of the motor boats, being the driving force relatively easy to get (you just need a more powerful engine), the attention to the efficiency has always been placed on a lower level.

Making a motor boat more efficient, namely optimizing its performance, essentially means two things: minimizing both its weight and its hydrodynamic resistance.

The weight is the factor that influences the most the efficiency of a planing motor boat, so its reduction is fundamental for the boat final performances.

For this reason Maxi Dolphin realizes all its motor yachts using pre-preg epoxy resin sheets, cured under vacuum at 85°C, the only ones that allow to have a light weight and to maximize the strength and the rigidity of the bottom.

The epoxy resin, compared to the polyester resins used for the construction of almost any kind of boat, has a higher level of extension, giving then more resistance to the fibres.

The epoxy is also a better adhesive so the integrity of the structure is made better. Its molecular structure, with very tight connections, safeguards it also against the osmosis phenomenon.

The epoxy is definitely more expensive than other resins and it requires particular skills using it but its superiority makes the realization of excellent laminated manufacts possible.

The pre-impregnated process (pre-preg) ensures that the content of resin in the sheet is the best one, so that the resistance is maximized and the weight is minimized.
